THE MIXMASTER
DJ
YONNY
Mixing records is an art; a talent
that New York City’s DJ Yonny has
infinitely mastered. By way of
Delaware /Philadelphia, Yonny has
quickly made a name for himself as a
versatile DJ. The Colombian and
Puerto Rican mixer is notorious for
his ability to read crowds and
respond to their energy with the
perfect mix, hence his official
moniker "Mixmaster DJ Yonny."
Crafting his
technique at an early age, Yonny
entered scratch competitions and
made his mark as a battle DJ. The
Mixmaster gained recognition along
the East coast, competing in Guitar
Center's Spinoff and winning a
regional competition for DMC DJ
Championships.
Taking
his skill a step further, Yonny excelled
in the Institute for Audio
Research's Audio Engineering, Music
Recording, and Production programs.
After earning a diploma from the
institute, the native New Yorker
taught DJ and radio production
seminars, instilling his techniques
to students, and went on to work at
Fat Beats, a mecca in New York City
for hip-hop music. At the record
store, Yonny spun record release
events for underground artists,
including Masta Ace, Prince Paul and
Immortal Technique.
With diploma in hand, Yonny scored a
gig at WWPR Power 105.1 FM to
produce commercial spots on-air and
work promotions. After several live
guest appearances on the “Star and
Bucwild Morning Show,” DJ Yonny was
welcomed as the Associate Producer
and On Air Mixer. Shortly after,
Yonny was awarded his own mixshow on
Power, titled “The List.” The
Saturday night two-hour radio show
gave him the flexibility and
creativity to spin everything from
hip-hop & reggae to house jams.
Official ratings in 2008
acknowledged that The Mixmaster’s
midnight timeslot was the highest
rated mixshow of its kind.
